A 65-year-old woman was murdered and a gold chain she wore was taken away by the killers at Periyakulathupatti near Manapparai in the district on Friday night. The police identified the victim as M. Kulanthaitherasu of Mugavanur village.
The police said the woman, who was living alone in her house, was fast asleep on cot in the front yard when the assailants slit her throat and took away three sovereigns of gold chain. She was found dead on Saturday morning by her neighbours.
Upon receiving the information, the Vaiyampatti police conducted inquiries at the scene of the crime and shifted the body to the government hospital at Manapparai for post-mortem. A case has been registered and the police are investigating.
