BJP State unit president Nainar Nagenthran on Monday (August 24, 2026) criticised the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to drop the proposed greenfield airport project at Parandur without identifying an alternative site.
In a social media post, Mr. Nagenthran charged that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had put the State’s development at risk for political reasons. He questioned why the government had decided to abandon the Parandur project without first selecting an alternative location or approaching the Centre with a proposal for a new site.
Mr. Nagenthran said Parandur had been selected after studies were conducted in and around Chennai, taking into consideration passenger traffic, soil conditions, need and demand, among other factors. Starting the process of selecting a new airport site afresh would result in a waste of time, money, and resources, he said.
He also questioned the fate of around 1,700 acres of land that, according to him, had already been acquired for the Parandur airport project. He sought clarity on how the government proposed to use the acquired land and what its response would be to landowners who had surrendered their land after receiving compensation.
