A 17-year-old boy died of electrocution on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) night while walking on a waterlogged road in Thiruvottiyur, Chennai.
The deceased, Nafael, 17, of Thangal Birbayilwan Dharga Street, Thiruvottiyur, was a Class 12 student. According to the police, heavy rain on Wednesday had inundated the streets, and he was electrocuted by a power leak from an underground cable while walking home from tuition class. He died on the spot.
Following the incident, residents gathered at the spot and staged a protest for over two hours on Wednesday night, condemning the Electricity Department and other departments concerned for their alleged negligence in repairing power lines. They claimed this was the third such electrocution-related death in the area.
