Amid frequent complaints over narrow, damaged, or missing walkways across Chennai’s major roads, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to rope in private consultants to design 60 km of new footpaths across all 15 zones.
The project covers both the bus routes and the interior roads. The total estimated cost of the construction works is ₹58 crore.

According to Chennai Corporation, the design consultation project is part of a citywide effort to implement non-motorised transport infrastructure on key bus routes and interior roads.
The civic body had earlier announced plans to construct 200 km of footpaths across the city at a projected cost of ₹200 crore.
The current consultancy covers the first 60 km of this proposal.
The consultancy covers three packages: 20 km each under Phase 5, Phase 7, and Phase 8, with approximate costs of ₹22 crore, ₹19.80 crore, and ₹16.20 crore, respectively.
Key components
The design process will include site surveys, conceptual layout drawings, and site implementation support until construction is completed, officials said.
The consultant must map above-ground utilities such as bollards, seating, lighting etc., assess road widths (carriageway size), identify obstructions like trees and other pedestrian needs to hand over a detailed design documentation and layouts.
This documentation process is expected to be completed within 30 days of commencement, according to officials.
The conceptual layouts will include single-line drawings showing the alignment of footpaths, crossings, street furniture, and proposed relocations of bus stops and bollards. The civic body confirmed that the private consultants will also assist during on-site implementation.
