A woman and her three children were injured when their car burst into flames soon after starting it at Polpully, Chittur, near here on Friday evening. Elsy Martin, 40, widow of the late Martin Poolakkad, and their children Aleena, 10, Alfin, 6, and Emy, 4, were injured in the explosion. Elsy is a nurse at Palana Hospital, Palakkad.
The accident occurred around 5 p.m. when Elsy started the car after returning from work. It was suspected that a gas cylinder in the vehicle ignited and caused the explosion. Local residents rushed to the scene after hearing the explosion and rescued the woman and children, and took them to hospital. Two of the children sustained severe burn injuries and were rushed to Jubilee Mission Medical College Hospital at Thrissur for intensive treatment along with the others.
