In yet another fatal road accident in Thrissur, a 34-year-old bank assistant manager lost his life after being run over by a bus on Saturday morning at Kurinjakal, near Ayyanthole. The deceased was identified as Abel Chacko Paul, son of P.P. Paul of Chiramal House, Laloor, Elthuruth.
According to police sources, Abel was riding his bike to work at Federal Bank, Kunnamkulam, when he lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid collision with another bike.
A two-wheeler coming from the opposite direction swerved to avoid a large pothole filled with rainwater. In an attempt to prevent a head-on crash, Abel tried to steer his bike away, but lost balance and fell under the wheels of a private bus travelling in the same direction.
Abel died on the spot. He is survived by his wife, Annet Ann Joy, and their three-year-old son, Aithen Paul.
The incident sparked protests in the area. Congress and BJP councillors and local workers blocked the road at Kurinjakal in protest, lying down across the road and blocking traffic. The police later intervened and removed the protesters.
A 32-year-old man died and his mother was critically injured a month back on MG Road in the city when a private bus hit their scooter after they swerved to avoid a pothole.
Today’s accident has once again raised questions about road safety and the condition of roads in the city, particularly during the monsoon season.
