All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has sought criminal action against the officials and councillors belonging to ruling party in Madurai Corporation involved in the property tax irregularities.
Addressing a protest meeting here, the party urban district secretary Sellur K. Raju condemned the irregularities in the Corporation.
Stating that several lakhs of rupees of tax-payers had been swindled since 2022-23, Mr. Raju said that mere resignation of Corporation zonal chairpersons was not enough. He also complained that some of the officials were also involved in the irregularities.
“All those involved should be arrested and the ill-gotten wealth confiscated,” he said.
The AIADMK leader was critical about the role of two State Ministers from the district.
“These Ministers should have taken up the issue with the Chief Minister,” he said.
Besides, Mr. Raju said that all the properties that underwent property tax downward revision should be taken up for scrutiny by a panel of Corporation officials.
“Middle-men who have been the main source of corruption in the corporation offices should be chased away,” he said.
The DMK high command forcing the zonal chairpersons to resign is the victory for the AIADMK’s persistent voicing against “large-scale” corruption in the functioning of the civic body.
Stating that the DMK government had betrayed the people who had voted it to power, he said, this would be the beginning of the end for the party soon.
