Amidst a severe financial crisis in Karnataka’s government universities, the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) Karnataka State Committee will hold a State-level students’ convention on Tuesday, July 8, at 10.30 a.m. at the Scouts and Guides Auditorium in Bengaluru.
The organisers said in Mysuru that government universities are struggling to provide even basic facilities to the students due to lack of funds. Many universities are unable to pay salaries to teaching and non-teaching staff, and pensions to retired employees. Over 9,000 posts remain vacant in government universities across the State.
“Instead of allocating adequate grants for the smooth functioning of universities, the government is resorting to annual fee hikes, further burdening students,” said AIDSO in a statement here. The convention aims to demand sufficient grants for universities and resolution of their pressing problems.
Prominent speakers at the convention included A. Murigeppa (former vice-chancellor, Hampi Kannada University), Rajasab (former vice-chancellor, Tumakuru University), and Shibashis Praharaj (general secretary, AIDSO Central Committee).
The AIDSO Mysuru District Committee has called upon students from across Karnataka to participate in large numbers and support the cause.
