The Excise department on Tuesday arrested a Bihar native with 6.2 kg ganja during a raid near the Iritakannan bridge in Talap.

The accused, Sheikh Irshad, has allegedly been smuggling ganja from Bihar and selling it in Kannur while residing in a rented house with his family in Azhikode north.

Acting on a tip-off received by Excise Commissioner squad member and civil excise officer P.V. Ganesh Babu, the raid was conducted with the support of anti-terrorism squad and conducted by a joint excise team including C.P Shanil Kumar, assistant excise inspector V.P. Unnikrishnan, and others.

Excise officials said Sheik Irshad had been under surveillance for suspected interstate drug trafficking. Further investigation are under way to trace the supply chain and other possible accomplices.
