A four-member masked gang broke into the house of an elderly couple at Kaduvanur near Kallakurichi in the early hours of Thursday (July 3, 2025) and allegedly decamped with 211 sovereign of gold jewellery and cash.

According to the police, Muniyan and his wife Ponnammal were staying alone in the house. Their son Kesari Varman (44), residing in Dubai, had come to Kaduvanur along with his family recently to attend a family function. Varman and his family left for Chennai on Wednesday to renew their passports.

The gang entered the house by breaking open the backdoor at around 2.30 a.m. and threatened the couple at knifepoint before allegedly taking away 211 sovereigns of gold jewellery, silver articles and ₹6,000 in cash.

Muniyan informed his son about the robbery over the phone and lodged a complaint with the Sankarapuram police. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
