The Detective Department of the Kolkata Police is set to take over the investigation into the South Calcutta Law College rape case, a high-ranking police official said.
Additionally, the Kolkata Police have added new sections to the case, including those of kidnapping, causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon, and criminal intimidation.
The victim, a student of the college, was allegedly gang-raped in the guard room on the campus on June 25. A former student, Monojit Mishra; two students of the college, Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed; and a guard on duty, Pinaki Banerjee, were arrested by the police in the case. A first information report was filed on charges of gang rape and wrongful confinement against the three key accused.
Earlier, a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was probing the case.
Kolkata Commissioner of Police Manoj Kumar Verma had said that a “lot of evidence had been collected and is currently being analysed.”
The Bharatiya Janata Party carried out protest marches in Kolkata on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) against the incident.
“The South Calcutta Law College today is West Bengal’s shame because of Mamata Banerjee… Medical colleges are not safe. Law colleges are not safe,” Mr. Adhikari said.
Protest rallies were also held by the Students Federation of India.
