The Kerala Health department on Friday (July 4, 2025) issued an alert in three districts – Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad – after two cases of the Nipah virus have been reported from Palakkad and Malappuram districts.
Preliminary tests done at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital and Malappuram have turned out to be positive for Nipah.
An official statement from the Health department said directions have been issued to districts to immediately launch preventive and control measures as per the State Nipah protocol, without waiting for confirmation from NIV.
Preventive and control measures
A high-level meeting was convened by Health Minister Veena George to discuss the control measures being launched in the three districts.
Preventive and control measures will be carried out for the same duration in the three districts, with 26-member committees formed in each district.
The contact lists will be prepared with the help of the police force, with the State and district helplines. Containment zones would be declared in Palakkad and Malappuram and the District Collectors will take the necessary measures.
The districts have been directed to make public announcements and detailed contact tracing, ensuring that no one is left out. Any cases of unnatural death during this period should be examined in detail
The Health Minister will convene a high-level meeting again later on Friday to discuss the Nipah surveillance and control measures.
