Sigachi Industries has revised the number of dead in the horrific fire and explosion at its manufacturing facility in Pashamylaram to 38 from 40 it had mentioned on Wednesday.
“The company has confirmed that the deceased are 38, instead of the earlier reported number of 40 team members,” the company said in a statement on Thursday. It, however, did not give a break up of how many of those dead were full time employees and how many contract workers.
Referring to the injured as team members, the company said 33 team members were injured and “12 have been discharged, each provided with ₹1 lakh as interim relief.”
It also cited the July 2 statement stating the company would provide full medical and rehabilitation support to the injured employees. Team members from Sigachi are available round-the-clock at hospitals to provide emotional and logistical support to the affected families.
The company said an investigation on Monday’s incident by the Chief Secretary to the State Government is underway. “A review and investigation of the mishap and its underlying causes,” will be undertaken and preliminary investigation findings are expected within seven days.
The company will refrain from commenting on the exact cause of the accident in order not to get ahead of the investigation. “For now, we stand by our earlier statement that the accident was not caused by a reactor explosion,” Sigachi said.
