For years, devotees entering Chennai’s Madhya Kailas Temple had to climb down eight steps to pray — not because of design, but because the road level was raised.

That’s about to change.

Now, twelve structures, including the temple’s raja gopuram and sanctum sanctorums, are being carefully lifted by nearly six feet.

The temple’s thick, three-foot-wide granite walls are being jacked up row by row and engineers are adding a cement concrete beam below the structure to prevent it from sinking or tilting. Mamchand House Uplifting Pvt. Ltd are in charge of the construction.

Built with the guidance of Maha Periyava Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati, the temple hosts over 13,000 shraddha rituals every year — with Lord Ganesha himself believed to preside over them.
