Not since the early ‘90s, has Parle’s Melody toffee has been in the public discourse like this.

Two weeks ago, Indian prime minister Modi gifted a bag of Melody toffees to Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni and the moment went viral on the internet. The duo has been called ‘Melodi’, a portmanteau of their names (à la Brangelina), for some time now and the gift was the culmination of the meme. Bengaluru-based chef Abhijit Saha has taken inspiration from this to create a special dessert menu using the nostalgic toffee. “Melody is a caramel and chocolate sweet treat. I saw that moment and thought let us do something with it.”

We have all eaten the toffee as a kid but many of us may have forgotten the taste, says the chef who runs the Italian restaurant Rosmarino and the farm to fork pizzeria, LYFE. “You cannot really go wrong with the combination of chocolate and caramel. We have grown up with it, and it is a nostalgic flavour.“ June 2 was also Italian National Day, or Festa della Repubblica, so Abhijit thought it an apt time to drop the limited-edition specials.

The dishes use the candy as a topping or garnishing, and the recipe themselves use flavours that are inspired by the toffee. “We have different kinds of desserts, from entremets to brownies.” On the menu is a Melodi trifle, with layers of chocolate pudding, cream cheese, chantilly cream, salted caramel, and toasted caramel flakes. The Melodi Mount Vesuvius is a lava cake with a salted caramel filling. The millionaire’s cake is a sponge that comes topped with the toffee. There is even a Melodi hot chocolate, made with chocolate ganache, caramel and warm milk.

Maybe now we can answer the age old question, ‘Melody itni chocolate-y kyon hai?’

Until June 7. At Rosmarino, Old Airport Road and LYFE, Whitefield. For more details, call 9606019838
