Coffee omakase, specialty brews, and more at Bengaluru’s newest cafe, Kura

A Japanese brew tower catches my eye as I walk into Kura, the newest cafe in Bengaluru’s already busy Indiranagar. The glass and copper structure stands at the cafe’s omakase brew bar, so you know they take their coffee seriously here. Started by cousins Kiran Vijayakumar and Prajwal Venugopal, Kura is designed for both coffee connoisseurs and newbies, with a robust food menu to back it up.

Kiran grew up playing in the area, and was keen to open his first venture here. The decor of Kura is warm and welcoming; solid wood furniture in dark hues, accented by pops of moss green. The style leans towards colonial, with rattan-backed chairs, with a modern touch. It is a refreshing change, compared to the Scandi and minimalist cafes in the area. Behind the bar is the equipment used by the baristas, from milk clarifying tech to the Japanese brew tower that makes a small batch of cold brew over the course of 12 hours. The resulting shot is a mellow and nutty flavour thanks to the slow extraction.

The coffees

The coffee at the cafe is sourced from Chikkamagaluru, as well as Northeast and Akaru. On the menu are the classics such as lattes and cappuccinos, and some experimental numbers such as the pretty cloud foam coffees, which are topped with a layer of foamy cream. This range has options such as Cherry Blossom Matcha and Biscoff Cloud. Along with my cold brew I also try a cortado. It is strong, caramelly and nutty.

Once a week, the cafe will host an omakase experience, where guests will be guided through a fixed sequence by the barista. The experience will have a single espresso pull, one of their signature foam cloud drinks, a frost cold blend, and a signature mocktail. The idea is to create such experiences that are not centered around alcohol.

What is on the menu?

Kura has a bakery counter with fresh bakes of the day, from croissants to cakes. “We get our specialty ingredients, such as the butter and flour, imported from France,” Kiran tells me. The desserts are picture perfect. I bite into a croissant, and pastry is layered and flakey. The Nutella cuboid, is a cube-shaped nutty chocolate mousse, made with Italian mascarpone. It is decadent and silky.

The food menu at Kura spans starters, salads, sandwiches, burgers and mains. One dish that impresses me is the oyster mushroom fritters. Slices of the mushroom are coated in panko breadcrumbs and a Cajun dust and then are deep-fried. The result is crunchy and umami-forward. The burger is a must-try. The spicy vegetarian number I try, has a kick to it and the sauces complement the patty well. Kura bakes its own buns, which makes the burger sturdy and fresh. There is nothing I hate more than a burger that is falling apart, this one passes the test.

The attention to detail and thought put behind the menu is evident at Kura. The design elements are an added plus. However, whether it will stand up to the hefty competition in the area, time will tell.
