National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. (NSE) made a modest debut on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), with its shares opening at ₹1,800 apiece, a 0.8% premium over its initial public offering (IPO) price of ₹1,785.
The exchange operator’s over ₹22,200 crore IPO, one of India’s largest market listings, came to fruition after a decade-long regulatory and legal overhang. The issue size was reduced before launch.
After opening slightly higher, NSE shares gained further momentum during the session, rising about 1% from the opening level to close at ₹1,818 on the first day of trading.
Speaking at the listing ceremony held on the BSE trading floor, NSE CEO Ashish Kumar Chauhan said capital markets are a signal of a well functioning society.
“There is nothing else that represents the aspirations of India’s future than NSE. What is good for India is good for NSE,” Chauhan said.
